SOS Children's Villages in Malawi carries out advocacy efforts and engagements, especially with the Ministry of Gender Community Development and Social Welfare through high-level engagements with respective Directorates of this ministry. This has helped strengthen public laws and policies in favor of and in the best interest of children and our target families.
We are involved in strategic partnerships contributing significantly to advocating for children within our target group on varied issues that affect them; we collaborate with the Joining Forces Alliance partners for Children in Malawi, various state and non-state actors and in technical working groups at local and national level in order to advocate for the rights of children.
Our work at SOS Children's Villages in Malawi revolves around the protection and development of children in a family environment.
Through our advocacy at local and national level, we engage decision makers on the rights and needs of vulnerable children, to bring changes in policy and practices that promote the rights of children. We have contributed to the development, review and implementation of various child-related laws, policies and regulations that protect our target group.
We have supported the government of Malawi in developing the 2019 National Children's Policy which protects all children in Malawi and particularly provides policy direction on what is required in caring for vulnerable children in the country.
We have lobbied for the enactment of the National Children's Commission and, finalization of the Child Care Protection and Justice Foster Homes Regulations which will regulate management of foster homes in the country.
We undertake community awareness campaigns aimed at protecting children from harmful cultural practices such as child labour, child marriages, child abuse and promote the development and implementation of social norms that promote the realisation of child rights.
We build the capacity of our programme participants so that they take a leading role in advocacy, challenging different systems and practices that affect the realisation of children and family rights.
